The City of Petersburg is located on Mitkof Island
in the heart of the Tongass National Forest. It is a small fishing
town with a population of approximate 3500 people. Unlike other
Inside Passage communities, Petersburg is off the route of the
large cruise ships and tourists are few. Petersburg is serviced
by daily Alaska airline flights as well as the Alaska Ferry System.
Founded by Norwegian immigrants in 1890, Petersburg
is a hard-working town known for its commercial fishing fleet
and Norwegian heritage. Local waters produce millions of pounds
of salmon, halibut, shrimp and crab. By the way, locally- harvested
seafood is featured if you choose to dine at Waterfront. In fact,
you may catch your own dinner!
A walk through town will reveal signs of Petersburg's
Norwegian past. Many buildings are adorned with traditional designs
and the historic Sons of Norway Hall is still an important part
of our town's social life. Petersburg is a marvelous community
where residents may spot you and ask with a smile “where are
you from”.
